Faure, Edgar
Born: August 18, 1908, Béziers
Died March 30, 1988. French politician. During World War II, he was in charge of legislation for the French Committee for National Liberation (CFLN), and participated in the French prosecutor team at the Nuremberg Trials. He was a member of the National Assembly (Radical Socialist Party) from 1946 to 1958, then a senator, and again a member of the National Assembly (Democratic Union for the Republic) from June 1968. He served as Minister of Finance, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Minister of Justice under the Fourth Republic, and was Prime Minister in 1952 and 1955-1956. During the Fifth Republic, he was professor of law at the University of Dijon in 1962, Minister of Agriculture from 1966 to 1968, and Minister of Education from 1968 to 1969, and worked on university reform through the Fundamental Law of Higher Education, but was dismissed in June 1969 due to differences of opinion with President G. Pompidou. He served as Minister of Labor and Social Affairs in the cabinet of P. Mesmer from 1972 to 1973. He was also known as a mystery writer.

Born: February 1, 1872 in Reims
[Died] April 20, 1960. Argentlieu French poet and playwright. He went to Paris at a young age and participated in the Symbolist movement. He founded the Théâtre des Arts (1890-93), staged his own and others' works, edited the magazine Vers et Prose (1905-14), and was a major driving force behind the Symbolist movement. His abundant poetry, with its simple and free rhythm reminiscent of folk songs, is collected in Ballades françaises (46 volumes, 1897-1949).

Born: January 30, 1841 in Paris
Died: February 16, 1899. Paris. French politician. Sixth President of the Third Republic (in office 1895-99). In August 1881, he became a member of parliament representing the Seine-Inferiure department, and in 1894, he joined the cabinet as Minister of the Navy. In January 1895, he became head of state with the support of right-wing and moderate factions. He worked hard to strengthen relations with Russia and conquered the island of Madagascar, but he died suddenly at the Élysée Palace amid growing attacks on the Republic following the Dreyfus and Fashoda affairs.

[Died] 1937. Paris. French art historian and critic. He discussed the relationship between art and culture from a philosophical perspective, and influenced A. Malraux. His main work was Histoire de l'art (1909-21).

フランスの詩人,劇作家。若くしてパリに出,象徴主義運動に参加。「芸術座」を創立し,自他の作品を上演 (1890~93) ,雑誌『詩と散文』 Vers et Prose (1905~14) を編集,象徴主義運動の大きな推進力となった。民謡を思わせる素朴で自由なリズムをもつ豊富な詩作品は,『フランスのバラード』 Ballades françaises (46巻,1897~1949) に収められている。

フランスの政治家。第三共和政の第6代大統領 (在任 1895~99) 。 1881年8月セーヌアンフェリュール県選出の議員となり,94年海相として入閣,95年1月右翼と穏健派の支持を得て国家元首となった。ロシアとの関係の強化に尽力し,マダガスカル島を征服したが,ドレフュス事件やファショダ事件に接し,共和政に対する攻撃が強まるなかでエリゼ宮で急死。
