Born: August 18, 1908, Béziers Died March 30, 1988. French politician. During World War II, he was in charge of legislation for the French Committee for National Liberation (CFLN), and participated in the French prosecutor team at the Nuremberg Trials. He was a member of the National Assembly (Radical Socialist Party) from 1946 to 1958, then a senator, and again a member of the National Assembly (Democratic Union for the Republic) from June 1968. He served as Minister of Finance, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Minister of Justice under the Fourth Republic, and was Prime Minister in 1952 and 1955-1956. During the Fifth Republic, he was professor of law at the University of Dijon in 1962, Minister of Agriculture from 1966 to 1968, and Minister of Education from 1968 to 1969, and worked on university reform through the Fundamental Law of Higher Education, but was dismissed in June 1969 due to differences of opinion with President G. Pompidou. He served as Minister of Labor and Social Affairs in the cabinet of P. Mesmer from 1972 to 1973. He was also known as a mystery writer. Fall |
