Basidiomycetes, Gastromycetes, Family Campylobacteria. It grows underground in sandy pine forests from spring to autumn. White, root-like hyphae extend underground and form numerous fruiting bodies. The fruiting bodies are ovoid or oblate, 1-6 cm in diameter, soft and elastic. It is semi-subterranean. They are white underground, but turn reddish purple or brown when exposed to air. The crust of the fruiting body is thin and often cracked. The inside of the fruiting body is fleshy, initially white, then yellowish brown, and reddish where damaged. The basidiophores are attached to the inner surface of the labyrinth that develops within this fleshy ground tissue. It is distributed throughout Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Europe, North America, and Siberia. In Japan, it is called Matsuhodo by its old name, and young fruiting bodies are eaten.
