...Although it was a suitable subject for stories and picture scrolls of this period, the tale of the golden-haired nine-tailed demon fox really grew during the Edo period. Many novels were written about it, including Takai Ranzan's Ehon Sangoku Yofuden (1804) and Shikitei Sanba's Tamamo-no-Mae Sangokudenki (1809), and it was also featured in puppet theater, but the culmination of this was the puppet theater Ehon Zoho Tamamo-no-Mae Asahi no Tamoto (1806) by Chikamatsu Baishiken and Sagawa Tōta. In addition, in kabuki plays, works that develop Tamamo-no-Mae include Tsuruya Namboku's Tamamo-no-Mae Kumoi no Hareginu (1821). ...
