...Although it was a suitable subject for stories and picture scrolls of this period, the tale of the golden-haired nine-tailed demon fox really grew during the Edo period. Many novels were written about it, including Takai Ranzan's Ehon Sangoku Yofuden (1804) and Shikitei Sanba's Tamamo-no-Mae Sangokudenki (1809), and it was also featured in puppet theater, but the culmination of this was the puppet theater Ehon Zoho Tamamo-no-Mae Asahi no Tamoto (1806) by Chikamatsu Baishiken and Sagawa Tōta. …この時期の物語や絵巻にもかっこうの題材となったが，金毛九尾の妖狐譚は，むしろ江戸期に入ってから大きく成長をみせた。高井蘭山の《絵本三国妖婦伝》(1804)や式亭三馬の《玉藻前三国伝記》(1809)をはじめとする多くの小説が書かれ，人形浄瑠璃においてもとりあげられたが，こうした状況を集大成したのが近松梅枝軒，佐川藤太による人形浄瑠璃《絵本増補玉藻前曦袂（あさひのたもと）》(1806)であった。また，歌舞伎劇において，玉藻前を発展させた作品として鶴屋南北の《玉藻前御園公服（くもいのはれぎぬ）》(1821)などがある。…
