Sadaharu Oh

Professional baseball player (infielder, left-handed batter/thrower), manager. Born in Tokyo on May 20th. His father is Chinese. Graduated from Waseda Jitsugyo High School. In 1957 (Showa 32), as a second-year high school student, he became the winning pitcher in the 29th National High School Baseball Invitational Tournament. In 1959, he joined the Yomiuri Giants. He switched to being a batter, but he began to hit a lot of home runs from 1962, when he perfected his one-legged batting style under the guidance of batting coach Hiroshi Arakawa (1930-2016). His pair with Shigeo Nagashima were known as the "ON Cannon" and contributed greatly to the Giants' nine consecutive championships. In 1977, he hit his 756th home run, breaking the career home run record held by American Hank Aaron. He was the home run king 15 times, won the triple crown twice (1973, 1974), and hit a total of 868 home runs until his retirement in 1980. His uniform number 1 was retired by the Giants. In 1977, he received his first People's Honor Award. He served as the Giants' manager from 1984 to 1988, winning the league championship in 1987. From 1995, he took over as manager of the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks (now the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks), winning the league championship in 1999 and defeating the Chunichi Dragons in the Japan Series to become Japan's number one. He won the championship again the following year in 2000, winning the league championship for the second consecutive year, and in 2003, he defeated the Hanshin Tigers to win the Japan Series.

He left the team in the middle of the 2006 season to recover from an illness, but returned in 2007. He retired as manager in 2008.
