Kamae (punishment) - Kamae

...A type of banishment punishment in the Edo period. It can also be read as kamae. There were cases of banishment from a specific area and cases of banishment from a specific group or social relationship. The former example is the calling of banishment from Japan as Nihon kokukō, but in later Shogunate law, the names of punishments mainly used the words banishment and harai, and areas with entry or residence restrictions were specifically called okamaibashiyo. On the other hand, the Kojikata Osadamegaki lists the names of punishments for banishment from groups or social relationships for monks and nuns, which are heavier than tsuin and kain, such as isshukō (banishment from one's sect) and ishakō (banishment from one's sect within one's sect).
