An insect of the family Chrysomelidae (illustration) in the order Coleoptera. The thorax is yellow-red except for the front and back. The forewings are shiny blue-blue. Body length is 4-5 mm. Both adults and larvae are known to feed on rice leaves, but they also feed on a wide range of plants in the Gramineae family, including reeds, orchard grass, and Imperata cylindrica. They inhabit mainly cold regions from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and also cause damage in the Korean Peninsula and mainland China. They are found in highlands in Taiwan. The larvae are gray-white in color and have a strongly raised abdomen. They are also called rice leaf beetles because they always have their own excrement on their backs, making them look like they are carrying mud on their backs.
