An alloy that has the property of absorbing and attenuating sound and vibration energy. Also called a vibration-damping alloy. Developed to compensate for the shortcoming of metals, which are the tendency to transmit sound and vibration, it absorbs vibration energy by using a two-phase mixed structure and irreversible movement of magnetic domain walls. Examples include aluminum-zinc alloy, iron-nickel-12% chromium steel, manganese-copper alloy, copper-aluminum-nickel alloy, and magnesium-zirconium alloy. Iron-chromium-aluminum alloy is a ferritic stainless steel vibration-damping alloy also known as Silentalloy. Iron-molybdenum alloy is called Zentalon. Note that this is different from vibration-damping steel plates, which are used for vibration and soundproofing by sandwiching rubber or resin between steel plates.
