Hojuji Temple

This Buddhist temple is considered one of the five great temples in Korea. It is located at the foot of Mt. Songni, up a winding hill to the east of Boeun in North Chungcheong Province. It is said to have been founded by Yoshinobu in 553, and later Shinpyo Risshi developed it into one of the most famous temples of the time. The temple grounds are a spectacular sight, with the Daeunghoden Hall, the five-story pagoda Besso-den Hall (rebuilt in 1626), a 33-meter-tall stone statue of Maitreya Bodhisattva (1964), and many other buildings. Besso-den Hall is full of dignity and stability, and is one of the greatest masterpieces of Korean five-story pagodas. There are many valuable national treasures, such as the Silla period's Sojishi stone lantern, the Four Heavenly Kings stone lantern, and the stone lotus pond (water basin).

韓国五大寺の一つとされている仏教寺院。忠清北道の報恩の東、つづら折りの坂道を登った俗離山の麓(ふもと)にある。553年に義信が創立したと伝えられ、のちに真表律師(しんぴょうりっし)が当代随一の名刹(めいさつ)に育て上げた。境内には大雄宝殿、五重塔の捌相(べっそう)殿（1626年の再建）、高さ33メートルの石造弥勒菩薩(みろくぼさつ)の巨像（1964）、その他多くの堂宇があって壮観である。捌相殿は威厳と安定感にあふれ、韓国五重塔の最高傑作の一つである。新羅(しらぎ)時代の雙獅子(そうじし)石灯、四天王石灯、石蓮池（水盤）など、貴重な国宝が多い。
