...For political reasons, a compromise called the "Pact of the Church" (1669-79) was reached, and Port Royal enjoyed a brief period of peace and prosperity. During this time, Jansenism gradually took on the appearance of a faction, and after Arnaud's death (1694), its leader was Pasquier Quesnel (1634-1719). The problem flared up again in the 18th century, and Port Royal was closed in 1709. In 1713, the Papal Bull Unigenitus was issued, condemning Quesnel's teachings, but the movement did not subside, and many clergymen who disagreed with the Roman decision appealed to the holding of a council. ...
