A city in southeastern Tennessee, USA. Facing the Tennessee River on the Georgia border, it is the center of an integrated development region. It was settled by the Cherokee Indians, and Chief J. Ross was famous. It was incorporated as a city in 1851. Its name comes from a Cherokee word meaning "a rock rising to a single point." It was a battlefield during the Civil War, and many of its ruins remain. It produces textiles, nuclear reactors, gas, agricultural machinery, etc. There is a TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) power plant, and the riverside is a recreational area. It has an opera company, a symphony orchestra, a small theater, a gallery, and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (established in 1886). Population: 167,674 (2010).
