A port city on the west coast of southern Sumatra, Indonesia. Capital of the province of the same name. Population 146,000 (1990). Originally called Bangkaur, it was under the control of the local indigenous nobility. In the early 17th century, pepper cultivation spread to the west coast of Sumatra, and Bengkulu flourished as the pepper shipping port for the region. At one time it was under the control of the Banten Kingdom in West Java. Of the European powers engaged in the pepper trade at the time, the British, who had been barred from the Minangkabau region of central Sumatra by the Dutch, made an agreement with the local nobility in 1685 and established a settlement here.
