Born: September 25, 1858 in Leipzig
[Died] March 9, 1945. Prague German geographer and geologist. He had a major influence on modern German geography. He also laid the foundations for ice age stratigraphy and glacial geomorphology. He studied at the University of Leipzig and received his doctorate from the University of Munich in 1883. From 1885 to 1906 he was a professor at the University of Vienna. In 2006 he was a professor at the University of Berlin and director of the Maritime Museum. He traveled to every continent except the Polar Regions. In 2008 he lectured at Yale University. In 2009 he was a visiting professor at Columbia University. He created a 1:1,000,000 world map. His major works include Morphologie der Erdoberfläche (Morphology of the Earth's Surface) (2 volumes, 1894) and Die Alpen im Eiszeitalter (The Alps in the Ice Age) (3 volumes, 1901-09).

Died: September 29, 1923. Stuttgart. German geomorphologist. Son of geographer A. Penck. After studying physics and natural history at the University of Vienna, he studied mineralogy at the University of Berlin and the University of Heidelberg. After serving as a professor at the University of Constantinople (1915), he became a professor at the University of Leipzig (21). He criticized W. Davis's theory of erosion reincarnation and advocated the theory of morphological analysis. He is also known for proposing new concepts such as the theory of parallel recession of slope forms, primitive peneplains, and piedmont steps. His book Die morphologische Analyse (27) was published.

ドイツの地形学者。地理学者 A.ペンクの子。ウィーン大学で物理学，博物学を修めたのち，ベルリン大学，ハイデルベルク大学で鉱物学を学ぶ。コンスタンチノープル大学教授 (1915) を経て，ライプチヒ大学教授 (21) 。 W.デービスの浸食輪廻説を批判して，地形分析論を唱えた。また，斜面形の平行後退説，原初準平原，山麓階などの新概念を提唱したことでも知られる。著書『地形分析』 Die morphologische Analyse (27) 。
