Hermetic thought - Hermetic thought
Hermeticism is an esoteric tradition of thought originating from the teachings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus. It is believed to have been established in Egypt in the 5th and 6th centuries A.D. by absorbing and integrating Pythagoreanism, Platonism, Stoicism, mystery religions, Gnosticism, astrology, and alchemy. The collective name for the historical materials is the "Hermetic Corpus." It is characterized by a vitalist and metaphysical worldview, the theory of correspondence between the microcosm and the macrocosm, and the assertion of the power of celestial bodies and their possibility of being manipulated. It also spread to the Islamic world and Europe, and Ficino's Latin translation of the Corpus Hermeticum (Collected Works of Hermes) was particularly influential. Some scholars, such as FA Yates, emphasize its contribution to the establishment of modern science. It is also important to note that it inspired artistic movements such as Romanticism and Symbolism in the 19th century and later. → Mysticism → Related topics Magic | Microcosm and Macrocosm | Jung | Alchemy
