Hermeticism is an esoteric tradition of thought originating from the teachings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus. It is believed to have been established in Egypt in the 5th and 6th centuries A.D. by absorbing and integrating Pythagoreanism, Platonism, Stoicism, mystery religions, Gnosticism, astrology, and alchemy. The collective name for the historical materials is the "Hermetic Corpus." It is characterized by a vitalist and metaphysical worldview, the theory of correspondence between the microcosm and the macrocosm, and the assertion of the power of celestial bodies and their possibility of being manipulated. It also spread to the Islamic world and Europe, and Ficino's Latin translation of the Corpus Hermeticum (Collected Works of Hermes) was particularly influential. Some scholars, such as FA Yates, emphasize its contribution to the establishment of modern science. ヘルメス・トリスメギストスに帰せられた教説に発する秘教的思想伝統をいい，英語ではHermeticism。西暦紀元前後５，６世紀のあいだに，エジプトでピュタゴラス主義，プラトン主義，ストア主義，密儀宗教，グノーシス主義，占星術，錬金術などを摂取・統合して成立したと見られる。史料の総称が〈ヘルメス文書〉。生気論・化生論的世界観，ミクロコスモス=マクロコスモスの照応説，天体の作用力とその操作可能性の主張などに特色がある。イスラム圏，ヨーロッパにも浸透し，特にフィチーノによる《コルプス・ヘルメティクム（ヘルメス選集）》のラテン語訳は大きな影響力をもった。近代科学成立への寄与を強調するF.A.イェーツのような学者もいる。19世紀以降のロマン主義，象徴主義など芸術運動に霊感を与えた点も見逃せない。→神秘主義
