Rakugo was performed in the open air during the Edo period. It was a form of street sermons in the Buddhist world that became a performing art, and in the Genroku period (1688-1704) it was called tsuji dangi (dangi is another name for sermons or preaching). In the section on tsuji dangi in Kagami Shiko's Honcho Bunkan, it is written that Kyoto storyteller Tsuyu no Gorobei "was known throughout the world as the originator of street rakugo." Stories were told in seats set up in places that drew large numbers of people, such as temple and shrine festivals, places to cool off, and night stalls. This method was used until vaudeville performances were established. [Sekiyama Kazuo] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
