Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Bestuzhev

Russian author. Pen name Марлинский/Marlinskiy. Born into a distinguished aristocratic family. While serving as an officer in the Imperial Guard, he published the collection of essays "The North Star" (1823-25) with the poet Ryleyev from a romantic point of view, and was a prolific critic. He participated in the Decembrist uprising in 1825 and was captured, sent first to Siberia and then to the Caucasus as a private soldier, where he was killed in battle with mountain people. During his exile, he wrote many historical novels and folklore books. His historical novels, including his masterpiece "Amarat Beg" (1832), were popular for their dramatic plots and elegant writing style.

ロシアの作家。筆名はマルリンスキーМарлинский／Marlinskiy。名門の貴族に生まれる。近衛(このえ)士官として勤務するかたわら、ロマン主義の立場から詩人ルイレーエフとともに文集『北極星』（1823～25）を刊行、評論に健筆を振るった。1825年のデカブリストの蜂起(ほうき)に参加して捕らえられ、最初シベリアへ、ついで一兵卒としてカフカス（コーカサス）へ送られ、山岳民との戦闘で戦死した。流刑中にも数多くの歴史小説や民俗学的著書を書いた。代表作『アマラト・ベク』（1832）をはじめとする歴史小説は波瀾(はらん)に富む筋立てと華麗な文体で人気を博した。
