A nomadic horse-riding people who lived in the steppes of Central Asia. They are said to be a branch of the Xiongnu. In 375, some of them marched west along the north coast of the Black Sea to attack the Ostrogoths, defeating the Visigoths and causing the Great Migration of the Germanic peoples. They reached the height of their power under Attila in the 5th century, but were defeated by the combined forces of the Western Roman Empire and Germanic tribes at the Battle of Catalaun, and retreated to the upper reaches of the Danube River. The name Hungary (Hungaria) comes from them. After Attila's death, Hungary was dissolved and destroyed due to internal conflicts and rebellions by the peoples under its control.
