...In Tibetan, it is called bod yig (hereinafter, the romanization is in principle the romanization of the Tibetan spelling). In the 7th century, Songtsen Gampo (581-649), who founded the kingdom of Tubo according to Chinese historical sources, is said to have sent his minister Thonmi Sambhota to India to create a new script based on the pronunciation of one of the dialects in central Tibet (U-Tsang region) at that time, using Indian script as a model. There are various theories about which script was the model, but the Gupta script is the most likely.
