Anticancer antibiotic. A polypeptide with a molecular weight of about 1400 obtained by Umezawa Hamao and others from a strain of actinomycetes in 1962, it is a basic, water-soluble white to yellowish-white powder. A compound that can be fractionated into 13 components as shown in the figure. The preparation is a hydrochloride salt mainly made of _A2 , and is sold under the trade name Breo. It is highly effective against squamous cell carcinomas such as head and neck cancer, esophageal cancer, and cervical cancer, and is also used against other malignant tumors. Its pharmacological action is to inhibit cell growth by cleaving DNA. It is relatively non-toxic, but side effects include pneumonia-like symptoms, hardening of the skin, hair loss, and nail deformation. →Anticancer drugs→Related items Antibiotics

制癌(がん)性抗生物質。1962年梅沢浜夫らが放線菌の一菌株から得た分子量約1400のポリペプチドで，塩基性，水に可溶の白〜帯黄白色粉末。（図）の13成分に分画される複合物。製剤はA₂を主体とした塩酸塩で，商品名ブレオ。頭頸部癌，食道癌，子宮頸管癌などの扁平上皮癌に著効，その他の悪性腫瘍(しゅよう)にも適用される。薬理作用はDNA切断による細胞発育阻止作用。毒性は比較的少ないが，副作用として肺炎様症状，皮膚の硬化，脱毛，爪(つめ)の変形などがある。→制癌薬
