Furyu Dance - Furyu Dance

Japanese:
Furyu Dance - Furyu Dance
This folk performing art embodies the spirit of "elegance" and is colorful and eye-catching. The performers put a lot of thought into their costumes and accessories, and dance to the accompaniment of songs, flutes, drums, and gongs. It became popular during the Muromachi period, and historically the dance was well known as the one held at Toyokuni Shrine on the seventh anniversary of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's death, and the pattern remains as a painting on the "Toyokuni Shrine Festival Folding Screen." The dance spread to other regions and became popular as a festival art form to ward off disasters and pray for a peaceful life, and many dances have been handed down to the present day, mainly in western Japan, such as the "Shamenchi Dance" in Yase, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, the "Hanagasa Dance" in Yatsushiro, former Kumage Town, Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, the "Kanko Dance" in Yamahata, Iga City, Mie Prefecture, the "Taiko Dance" at Aburahi Shrine, former Koka Town, Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, and the "Zanzaka Dance" in Osugi, former Oya Town, Yabu City, Hyogo Prefecture. The Agency for Cultural Affairs has decided to propose "Furyu Dance" as an intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO in 2021 as well as in 2020.
