Bristol Channel

A large inlet that extends from the Atlantic Ocean between the Cornwall Peninsula in the southwest of England and southern Wales. It is long from east to west, about 130 km long. The inner part of the inlet leads to the estuary of the River Severn. It is generally translated as "strait", but in reality it is "Bristol Bay". As a long and narrow bay with an outlet on the west, the tidal range can reach a maximum of 16 meters, and the tidal current is about 20 kilometers per hour. At high tide, the high tide flows into the inner part of the bay and travels up the course of the River Severn as a "bore". Cities such as Bristol and Cardiff are located at the inner part of the bay.

イギリス、イングランド南西部のコーンウォール半島とウェールズ南部との間に、大西洋から大きく湾入した入り江。東西に長く、長さ約130キロメートル。入り江の奥はセバーン川の三角江に続いている。一般に「海峡」と訳されているが、その実態は「ブリストル湾」である。西に出口のある細長い湾であるため潮差が最大16メートルにも達し、潮流は時速20キロメートルほどになる。満潮時には高潮が湾奥へ向かい、セバーン川の流路を「ボア」となってさかのぼる。湾奥にはブリストル、カージフなどの都市が立地する。
