…He is the protagonist of the Dyl Ulenspiegel (originally called Ulenspiegel), published in 1510-11 by the Grieninger Bookshop in Strasbourg (now Strasbourg) and reprinted many times. The author is believed to have been Hermann Bothe, a tax clerk in Brunswick. Born in Kneidlingen near Brunswick, Till left his village and took up various professions in various places, including as a craftsman, painter, and doctor, and the book is a collection of 95 humorous stories in which he mocks the people around him, especially arrogant masters, government officials, doctors, nobles, and the pope. …
