The origins of physiognomy in the Mediterranean region are unclear, but it is said that Pythagoras and Socrates had already estimated the qualities of potential disciples from their appearances. According to Cicero, when Zopyros, who was an expert in physiognomy, saw many vices in Socrates's appearance and was ridiculed by the people, Socrates himself agreed with Zopyros and said that he had overcome those innate vices through reason (Tusculum Treatise). Physiognomy at that time can be seen in Physiognomy, written by someone from the Aristotelian school and long considered to be the work of Aristotle himself.
