Spanish Benedictine monk. One of the most prominent figures of the Spanish Enlightenment. In his numerous works, which combined a modern spirit with deep religious faith, he attacked the habitual attitude of Spanish intellectuals to research and the frivolous worship of superstition among the general public, and advocated the pursuit of truth solely through the means of reason and experience. His most famous works, Critique of the World (1726-39) and Letters of the Erudite and Curious (1742-60), are both composed of essays and short essays on a wide variety of topics.

スペインのベネディクト会修道士。スペイン啓蒙期の最も傑出した人物の一人。近代精神と深い宗教信仰とが一致した数多くの著作において，当時のスペイン知識人らの研究に対する常習的な態度と，一般民衆の軽薄な迷信崇拝を攻撃し，理性と経験という手段のみによる真実の探究を説いた。代表作の《世相批判》(1726‐39)と《博識怪奇書簡》(1742‐60)は，どちらも多岐多様な題目についての小論文とエッセーからなっている。
