1676‐1764 Spanish Benedictine monk. One of the most prominent figures of the Spanish Enlightenment. In his numerous works, which combined a modern spirit with deep religious faith, he attacked the habitual attitude of Spanish intellectuals to research and the frivolous worship of superstition among the general public, and advocated the pursuit of truth solely through the means of reason and experience. His most famous works, Critique of the World (1726-39) and Letters of the Erudite and Curious (1742-60), are both composed of essays and short essays on a wide variety of topics.
