Hodgson's hawk-eagle
A bird of the order Accipitridae and family Accipitridae (illustration). It is one of the largest of all hawks. The Japanese subspecies is particularly large and impressive. It reaches a total length of 70-80cm and a wingspan of 150cm, but those in the south are smaller. It is found in southeastern China, the Himalayas, parts of India, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia, with Japan as its northern limit. It prefers forests, especially coniferous forests. It does not migrate. Its back is black-brown, its underside whitish with black-brown vertical stripes. Its tail has 5-6 black bands that are conspicuous when in flight.

タカ目タカ科の鳥(イラスト)。タカと名付けられているものの中では最大級の一つ。とくに日本産の亜種は大型でりっぱである。全長70~80cm,翼の開張は150cmに達するが,南方のものは小さい。日本を北限として,中国南東部,ヒマラヤ,インドの一部,スリランカ,東南アジアに分布する。森林,とくに針葉樹林に好んで生息する。渡りはしない。背面は黒褐色で,下面は白っぽく,黒褐色の縦斑がある。尾には5~6条の黒い帯があり,飛翔(ひしよう)時に目だつ。
