1884‐1941 German poet and critic. Born in a village on the Vistula River in what is now Poland, he studied at the University of Berlin and wrote poetry and was a critic while working as a manuscript examiner at the Fischer Bookstore. He gained recognition with his collection of poems, The Music of a Faun (1916), which incorporated mythological elements into meticulous observations of nature, pioneering a unique field of nature poetry that reflected human psychology and social trends in nature, a style that was passed down to poets after the war. His representative works include The Breath of the Earth (1930) and The Forest of Silver Thistles (1934). He also served as a secretary of the Prussian Academy, but was treated poorly by the Nazis and lived in internal exile. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
