A town in Kumage County, occupying the western half of the Murozu Peninsula in the southeastern part of Yamaguchi Prefecture. The main settlement, Hirao, developed through salt production. The town also produces rice. The remains of the salt fields have become an industrial area. There is also a lumber complex. The town is home to the Shiratori Tomb, a keyhole-shaped tumulus.
