Eight (English spelling) eight; eight-oar shell

Japanese: エイト(英語表記)eight; eight-oar shell
Eight (English spelling) eight; eight-oar shell
A boat rowed by eight people, and a race using such a boat. It is considered the "flower of rowing," and almost all major traditional races, such as the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race and the Waseda-Keio University race (Waseda-Keio Regatta), are held with eights. A coxswain, who is responsible for rudder operation and pace setting, always sits at the back of the boat, and the eight rowers, arranged alternately on the left and right, follow his instructions to move the boat forward. It is the fastest of all boats. Since the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, the course for the Olympic Games has been 2000m for both men and women, including other events.
