King and high priest of the Maccabean (Hasmonean) dynasty of Judea. Reigned 67 BC, 63 BC-40 BC. In 76 BC, he became high priest after his mother Alexandra became queen, and was named successor by her, but shortly after her death, he was deprived of his throne and high priesthood by his brother Aristobulus II. He was fighting with his brother, with the help of Nabataean kings Aretas III and Antipater, when the Romans intervened, and after the fall of Jerusalem in 63 BC, he was appointed high priest thanks to Pompey. However, his territory became a Roman vassal state, and the real power of governance gradually passed to Antipater and his two sons.
