The patron saint of wandering courtesans and puppeteers. He has been revered since the late Heian period. He is said to be one of the gods of the road, and is placed in various shrines as a subordinate shrine. The most famous is Ebisu Daimyojin (now Nishinomiya Shrine) in Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture, where white powder is applied to the face of a wooden deity during the New Year.
