Silk Rebellion

Japanese: 絹一揆 - きぬいっき
Silk Rebellion
An uprising occurred in Kozuke Province in the mid-Edo period. In 1781, village headmen and inn wholesalers applied to set up a cloth and silk tax office at the silk market held in Kozuke and Musashi Provinces, and the shogunate approved the plan. This caused peasants who produced raw silk and silk fabrics in the fields to rebel, leading to an uprising that included seditions. The rebels were approaching Takasaki Castle, and the shogunate decided to suspend the establishment of the office.
