Beauty and the Beast - La Belle et la Bête

Beauty and the Beast - La Belle et la Bête

This is a representative story from the children's magazine ( Magazine for Children ) (1757) by French author Madame de Beaumont. A prince who is transformed into a beast by magic is cursed and restored to his original state by the pure and supreme love of a kind-hearted girl, who does not care about the beast's ugliness or fright. This story summarizes the author's educational philosophy as a female teacher who dedicated her life to educating children, and is said to reflect her criticism of the chaos and decline of morals in France on the eve of the Great Revolution, when she lived. However, the theme of this story is not original to the author, but is a refinement of folk tales such as "The Beauty and the Monster," "The Prince Transformed into a Snake," and "The Little Frog," which have the theme of "magic and curses" that have been passed down in various parts of Europe since ancient times. This story was also made into a film (1946) directed by Jean Cocteau and starring Jean Marais.

movie

French film. 1946 production. Directed by Jean Cocteau. This is a masterpiece in which the talented Cocteau, who is active in various artistic fields such as poetry, novels, painting, theater, and film, adapted a fairy tale by French fairy tale writer Madame de Beaumont into a film with his own adaptation. The costumes and props are permeated with a unique aesthetic sense, starting with the surrealist objects that tell of Cocteau's origins, such as the candlestick that is a human arm and the moving statue on the pillar in the house of the beasts, and create a strange and fantastical fairy tale world for adults. The film stars Jean Marais. The music is by Georges Auric, who has been in charge of Cocteau's major works since "Les Poets Blood" (1930). The cinematography is by Henri Alekan (1909-2001), who was also highly praised for René Clement's "Les le vieux railroads" (1945). René Clement participated as a technical advisor. Winner of the French film award, the Prix Louis-Delluc.
