A city in eastern Yamagata Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. It occupies the Midare River alluvial fan in the northern part of the Yamagata Basin and the mountain slopes in the eastern part, and has extensive forests, plains, and farmland. Rice fields extend downward from the springs at the end of the fan. Cherries, apples, and pears are produced in abundance, and the fruit canning industry is thriving. It is on the Ou Main Line and is home to Yamagata Airport. The airport industrial park is home to many cutting-edge industries. It is home to Higashine Hot Springs (weakly saline spring, 56°C). 206.94 km2 . Population: 46,414 (2010).

山形県東部の市。1958年市制。山形盆地北部の乱(みだれ)川扇状地と東部の山地斜面を占め,山林,原野,畑が広い。水田は扇端の湧泉帯から下方に展開。サクランボ,リンゴ,セイヨウナシの生産が多く,果物のかん詰工業が盛ん。奥羽本線が通じ,山形空港がある。臨空工業団地には先端産業を中心に立地している。東根温泉(弱食塩泉,56℃)がある。206.94km2。4万6414人(2010)。
