A city in eastern Yamagata Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. It occupies the Midare River alluvial fan in the northern part of the Yamagata Basin and the mountain slopes in the eastern part, and has extensive forests, plains, and farmland. Rice fields extend downward from the springs at the end of the fan. Cherries, apples, and pears are produced in abundance, and the fruit canning industry is thriving. It is on the Ou Main Line and is home to Yamagata Airport. The airport industrial park is home to many cutting-edge industries. It is home to Higashine Hot Springs (weakly saline spring, 56°C). 206.94 km2 .
