(Transliteration of Upāli. Also written as Upāli or Ubara.) One of the Buddha's ten great disciples. Known as the best in preserving the Vinaya, he recited the Vinaya at the first gathering after the Buddha's death. ※ Bonshūnbon Shasekishu (1283), vol. 4 "At the Biblical Cave, Upāli recited the Vinaya, and Ananda recited the sutra."
