Kumbum Temple - Kumbumji (English name) Sku 'bum
The largest Lamaist temple in the Qinghai region, located 30km southwest of Lusha'er Town, Huangzhong County, Qinghai Province, China, from Xining. It is one of the six major temples of the Yellow Sect (Gelu sect). It has been designated as a national key cultural heritage protection unit. Kumbum means 100,000 Buddha statues in Tibetan. It is also called Ta'er Temple, but the name comes from the fact that there is a large tower dedicated to Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Yellow Sect, inside the Great Golden Tiled Hall, which corresponds to the main hall. It was founded in 1577. There are many ancient buildings in a mixed Han and Tibetan style on the grounds, such as a Buddha hall, a pagoda, and monks' quarters, and at its peak the temple was said to have housed over 3,000 monks.
