…Historically, it refers to a Germanic tribe, the area they settled in, or a tribal principality that was established in the Middle Ages in this area. The Alemanni (alle Männer), a Germanic tribe, invaded and settled in the Roman territory between the Rhine and the Iller rivers up to Lake Constance in the 3rd century, and in the 5th century expanded their settlement to Alsace, Switzerland, Vorarlberg, and the Lech River in the east. They are one of the six tribes that make up the German people, along with the Saxons, Franks, Thuringians, Bavarians, and Friesens. The Alemanni and the area they settled in, Alemannia, came to be called Schwaben around the 10th century, but this name comes from the Suebi, a tribe that lived in Germania around the 1st century. …
