Zhang Yanyuan's Record of Famous Paintings of the Past is the first official history of painting, and systematically summarizes the history of painting up to that point in chronological order. It also places the highest value on Wu Daoxuan of the Tang Dynasty and develops a theory of art based on spirit or vitality. …
