A village in Ama County, on the western edge of Aichi Prefecture. Population 5,096 (1995). It is located in the western Nobi Plain, on the eastern bank of the downstream Kiso River. It is a ring-shaped settlement in the Kiso River delta, and within the village remain two-story mizuya-style houses built with stone walls. Blessed with fertile soil and irrigation, it has long been an agricultural region producing lotus roots and other crops, and in recent years greenhouse horticulture has become popular, with the cultivation of strawberries, tomatoes and flowers expanding. Sand dunes along the Kiso River can be seen near the Tokai Ohashi Bridge, which opened in 1969. [Hagiwara Tsuyoshi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
