The extreme left

Japanese: 過激派 - かげきは（英語表記）the extreme left

A general term for the New Left movement organizations that emerged to criticize the established left, such as the Japanese Communist Party, the Japan Socialist Party, and the General Council of Japanese Trade Unions, among the political forces that are on the fringes of Japanese politics due to the radicalism of their ideology and actions. It began with the "Bund" (Communist League), which led the All-Japan Federation of Student Self-Governments (Zengakuren) in the 1960 Security Treaty revision issue, and many New Leftists became active during the university conflicts of the late 1960s. However, after the end of the university conflicts, the New Left has engaged in internal feuds over leadership, and has engaged in guerrilla struggles, including the use of force, in the Narita struggle and the anti-Daijosai struggle, but its influence is declining.

その思想や行動の過激性から日本政治の周辺におかれている政治勢力のうち，共産党や社会党，日本労働組合総評議会など既成左翼を批判する形で生れた新左翼系運動組織を総称する呼び名。 1960年安保改定問題で全日本学生自治会総連合 (全学連) を指導した「ブント」 (共産主義者同盟) に始り，1960年代末の大学紛争の時代には多くの新左翼が運動をになった。しかし大学紛争の終結以後は，新左翼内部の主導権をめぐり内ゲバ事件を繰広げたほか，成田闘争や反大嘗祭闘争などでも武力行使を含むゲリラ闘争を展開しているが，勢力を減少させている。
