A scholar of the Madhyamaka school of Indian Buddhism. His Sanskrit name was Bhāvaviveka or Bhavya. He established a method of actively proving the idea of ​​emptiness that appears in Nagarjuna's Madhyamaka-karika by using logical inference. He first wrote the Madhyamaka-karika, in which he demonstrated that emptiness could be proven using this method and criticized the theories of other schools. He later wrote the Prajnaparamita-ron, a commentary on the Madhyamaka-karika, and the Mahāyāna-shōchinrō, a general overview of the idea of ​​emptiness. However, his logical method was later criticized by Gekkyō (7th century), which is said to have caused the split of the Madhyamaka school.

インド仏教中観(ちゅうがん)派の学者。サンスクリット名はバーバビベーカBhāvavivekaまたはバビヤBhavya。龍樹(りゅうじゅ)の『中論』に表れる空(くう)の思想を論理学的な推論式によって積極的に論証するという方法を確立した。まず『中観心論』を著し、その方法によって空を論証できることを明らかにし、他学派の説を批判し、のちに『中論』の注釈書『般若燈論(はんにゃとうろん)』、空思想の概説書『大乗掌珍論(しょうちんろん)』を著述した。しかしその論理学的方法は後代に月称（7世紀）によって批判され、中観派分裂の起因となったとされる。
