Born November 4, 1781. The second son of Shimazu Shigehide, lord of the Satsuma Kagoshima domain. He was adopted by Okudaira Masao, and in 1786 became the 5th lord of the Okudaira clan of the Nakatsu domain in Buzen (Oita prefecture). He attempted to reform the domain's government and established the domain school, Shinshukan. He studied Japanese classics and waka poetry under Watanabe Shigena. He encouraged Dutch studies, and had the Dutch dictionary "Rango Yakusen" edited and published. He passed away on June 10, 1859. He was 75 years old. He was commonly known as Kuhachiro and Saemon-no-jo. His pen name was Toyosu. His collection of poems is "Chiyo no Kodo."
