IEA - International Energy Agency
International Energy Agency. An organization under the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) whose purpose is to ensure energy security, mainly from petroleum. An organization representing petroleum-consuming countries, it was established in 1974 after the first oil crisis, at the suggestion of US Secretary of State Kissinger. Its secretariat is in Paris. 29 countries are members.
[Additional information] Membership is subject to certain conditions, such as stockpiling a 90-day supply of crude oil and petroleum products equivalent to the previous year's average net import volume and introducing measures to curb domestic consumption by up to 10 percent. Among the OECD member countries, Chile, Iceland, Mexico, Slovenia, and Israel are not members of the IEA.
