Badger (Old World badger)
A carnivorous mammal of the Mustelidae family (illustration) with short, thick, sturdy limbs. Its body is sturdy and its snout protrudes. Its overall body is well suited to digging holes. Its body length is 56-81 cm, tail length 11-20 cm, and weight 10-16 kg. Its upper body is gray, while its underside and limbs are black. Its head is white with a black stripe running from near the tip of its nose to around its eyes and ears. It is found widely in temperate lowlands and mountains in Europe and Asia, including Japan (except Hokkaido), and inhabits mainly forests and shrubs, as well as coastal cliffs, farmland, and sometimes urban areas.

太くて短い,がんじょうな四肢をもつ食肉目イタチ科の哺乳類(イラスト)。胴はがっしりとして,吻(ふん)は突出する。全体として穴掘りに適した体だといえる。体長56~81cm,尾長11~20cm,体重10~16kg。体色は上面が灰色,下面および四肢が黒色。頭部は白色の地に,鼻の先端近くから目の周囲,耳にかけて黒色の縞がある。ヨーロッパおよび日本(北海道を除く)を含むアジアの温帯の低地から山地まで広く分布し,主として森林,低木林にすむほか,海岸の崖,畑地,ときには市街地内にも生息する。
