Lantana (English spelling) Lantana camara; lantana

Lantana (English spelling) Lantana camara; lantana
A small shrub of the Verbenaceae family, native to tropical America and Africa. It is originally the name of a genus, and a general term for about 150 species, but one of them, L. camara , is usually called simply lantana. In Japan, it is often grown in pots in greenhouses. In warm areas such as the Ryukyu Islands and the Ogasawara Islands, it is grown outdoors as a hedge, and often escapes and becomes naturalized. The stems are square and hairy, and small thorns grow sparsely. The leaves are opposite, oval, about 6 cm long, pointed at the tip, and have serrated edges. From summer to autumn, long flower stalks emerge from the leaf axils, and many small flowers grow densely at the tip in a scattered shape. The corolla is initially yellow or pale pink, and later changes to orange or deep red. Therefore, the center of each inflorescence is pale and the periphery is dark. The Japanese name, Kououka (red and yellow flower) and Shichihenge (seven changes), are based on the change in flower color.
