...Yakut geography records that the huge Ghumdan Castle of the Himyar Kingdom was built in Sana'a in the 1st century. In 525, Abraha, the Abyssinian (Ethiopian) military governor, destroyed the Himyar Kingdom and made the city his capital, building a magnificent church. During the Islamic period, the city moved away from its center of activity somewhat, and came under Turkish sovereignty from 1546 onwards, but in 1905 the kingdom of the Zaydi Imams, who had power in the plateau region, drove out the Turks and established the foundations of present-day Yemen. ...
