This pottery is produced in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Its origins date back to the early Edo period, when the fifth lord of the Kaga domain, Maeda Tsunanori, invited the Urasenke tea ceremony master Senso Soshitsu (Sen Soshitsu) from Kyoto to Japan. The potter, Chozaemon I, who accompanied him, began making tea bowls and other items using clay from Ohi Village on the outskirts of Kanazawa.
