Riverweed - Riverweed

Japanese: カワヂシャ - かわぢしゃ
Riverweed - Riverweed

A biennial plant of the Scrophulariaceae family (APG classification: Plantaginaceae). The stems are erect, 20-60 cm tall, and round and soft. The leaves are opposite and lanceolate, with the base embracing the stem. From May to June, several thin inflorescences emerge from the leaf axils and bloom sparsely. The corolla is white with purple streaks, deeply lobed into four parts, and 4 mm in diameter. It grows in rice paddies and riverbanks, and is distributed from Honshu to Okinawa, Taiwan, China, Southeast Asia, and India. The name comes from the fact that the shape of the leaves resembles that of lettuce of the Asteraceae family, and they are edible when young.
