Trade took place between Japan and the Yuan Dynasty of China. The Yuan Dynasty invaded Japan twice (during the Mongol invasion), and one of the aims was to make Japan a tributary state and acquire its wealth. Therefore, although the two countries were in a state of political tension, they maintained economic exchanges. In 1276 (Kenji 2), between the Bun'ei Invasion (1274) and the Koan Invasion (1281), a Japanese merchant ship returned from Mingzhou, China. The following year, in 1277, the Yuan Dynasty established Shiboushi in Quanzhou, Guangzhou, Keigen, Shanghai, and Ping to manage trade, and in the same year allowed a Japanese merchant ship carrying gold and seeking to trade for copper coins.
