Tao Zong-yi; T`ao Tsung-i
A Chinese scholar in the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties. Born in Huangyan, Zhejiang Province. His courtesy name was Jiucheng. His pen name was Nancun. His father, Tao Yu, was the Chief Privy Councillor in Jiangxiang, Fujian. He failed the imperial examination and gave up on being appointed to the government. He devoted himself to the study of ancient studies, and did not attend the invitation of Zhang Shicheng, a great hero of the late Yuan period, or the call for Confucian scholars in the 4th year of Hongwu (1371) of the Ming dynasty. However, in the 29th year of the same year, he tried reading the Great Exhortation at the Ministry of Rites. His book, Records of the Graces (30 volumes), is an important resource for research on the Yuan dynasty. He also edited the series Shuohu (100 volumes), which summarized over 1,000 classics, histories, and novels from the pre-Qin to the Yuan dynasties. His other works include the Collection of Nancun Poems (4 volumes).
