...However, Keita's socialist approach did not produce the expected results, just as in the case of Ghana's Nkrumah, and two years after Nkrumah's downfall, Keita was also ousted in a military coup in 1968. Moussa Traoré, who led the military coup, became chairman of the Military Committee for National Liberation and embarked on economic reconstruction under military rule. A new constitution was then passed by referendum in 1974, and Traoré was elected president in the 1979 elections held based on this new constitution.
