Kakubei - Kakubei

Japanese:
Kakubei - Kakubei

Kabuki dance. A dialogue of Tokiwazu and Nagauta. The original title is "The Empress's Moon Banquet on the Island." Lyrics by Segawa Jokou II, music by Kishizawa Shikisa III and Kineya Saburosuke IV. Choreography by Ichiyama Nasoro, Fujima Daisuke and Matsumoto Goroichi. It was first performed in September 1828 (Bunsei 11) at the Nakamuraza in Edo, with Nakamura Shikan II (Utaemon IV) playing the role of Kakubei and Segawa Kikunojo 5 playing the role of female courtesan. It involves the street performer Kakubei Jishi and a female bird-chaser, and the highlights include the Matsuzaka song "Shibata Gomankoku...", the Daimoku dance with the fan drum, and the dance of the Seven Wonders of Echigo. The content contrasts the rustic charm of Kakubei with the Yoshiwara atmosphere of the bird-chaser, and the music and choreography are light and elegant. Today, it is danced only in Tokiwazu, but the music remains in Nagauta. At the premiere, it was designed to be taken from "Tongue-Dashi Sanba", with Kakubei changing from Sanbaso, the bird-chaser changing from Senzai, and the old man changing into the brave man on stage, but this was later omitted. Another piece is the Nagauta piece "Kakubei" (1847), which is the fifth act of the eleven-act chosagoto from "Kanadehon Chushingura."
